“Sculptures of nothing in houses of sand!” Stewart Lee

The best thing on telly at the moment is Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle ( BBC2 on Mondays at 10 pm). If you haven’t seen it by now – watch it. I haven’t heard of him before until I watched the first episode about books where he had a go at Chris Moyles and Dan Brown. I don’t use the word genius very often but it does apply to Lee.

You won’t find catchphrases or many impressions here but a clever discourse on subjects from books to the credit crunch featured in yesterday’s episode which was so far the funniest. The clue is in his delivery – repetition and building up of ideas and his calm voice – which kept reminding me of something. The penny dropped when my husband said that it reminds him of the delivery of hypnotic scripts. And he is absolutely right- it’s very clever way to suck you in and get you hooked.

The sketches are funny too, but it is really the stand-up which is compelling to watch. I look forward to next week’s episode.
