Still reading

In the last couple of months I have tried to keep up with my challenge to read one to two books per week, but haven’t really kept it up. However I have finished a few books since my last entry. Among them chick lit novel “The other side of the story” by Marian Keyes, which is a tome of 648 pages. The story is about three women: a writer, her agent and a wannabe-writer who happens to be the writer’s former best friend. It’s very funny and one of those books you want to read in one sitting – time permitting. I certainly got hooked on Marian Keyes and have to read some of her other novels.

Before that novel I read a book on how to write chick lit. “Will write for Shoes – How to write a Chick Lit Novel” by Cathy Yardley. I am not sure if I’ll ever write a chick lit novel, but I like the idea. The book certainly gives an insight into themes, trends, stereotypes and how to get started.

When I went to Germany I bought three books, which I have almost finished. “Generation Doof – Wie bloed sind wir eigentlich? (=Generation Thick or Stupid – How stupid are we really?) by  Stefan Bonner and Anne Weiss. The two authors are in their mid twenties (I believe) and write about the generation born in the late 70ies and 80ies onwards. Though it is written about the state of this generation in Germany, this could easily apply to Britain. The book describes generation dumb in action and is divided into: leisure – the normal day-to-day activities of generation dumb; education and general knowledge; jobs; entertainment; love and raising children. I am somehow relieved to say I don’t belong to the generation and it is quite frightening how the people described manage to go through life without a care in the world and such a sense of entitlement.

The second book I finished in a couple of days is a novel by Tommy Jaud “Rest Urlaub” (= holiday) about a guy who is  not sure if he wants to stay in the same place, with the same friends and his girlfriend. Instead of travelling to Mallorca  again, he fakes getting mugged at the airport and books a flight to Argentina, while his girlfriend and mates are holidaying  in Mallorca thinking he is at home… I enjoyed the book, it is very funny and Argentina sounds like a crazy country to live in.

Currently I am reading “Schmitz’ Katze” by comedian Ralf Schmitz. I never heard of Ralf Schmitz, though he is very well known in Germany, but I lost touch with what’s going on in Germany – that includes entertainment. I bought the book, because I read an interview with him in the local paper and I had a look at the book. It is very funny and I can recommend this to every cat owner and those who want to buy or adopt a cat. Ralf Schmitz has his cat Minka since he was a little boy of 8. Minka is now 23 years old, deaf and a bit forgetful, but still alive. The book hat lots of photos and anecdotes about Minka and the cats of friends and family and lots of photos too. It won’t take me long to finish this and then I have to check what’s on my shelf.

As I am going on a holiday soon, I have to refresh the bit of Italian I know and will pack some chick lit novels for the beach. I am sooo looking forward to some proper summer. It’s been pissing down for days now and this summer like the last two is a complete washout.
