It's quite necessary if you live on a main road with the traffic like it is in Cardiff. There's nearly always heavy traffic on that road during the day Monday to Saturday.

We adopted a fluffy black cat back in the 80's called Topaz from a cats and dogs home. I actually had an idea of a cat looking like that before visiting the shelter having seen one like that in another shelter. My friend wanted the tabby but Topaz was recommended. She didn't take to me much but instead took to my friend.

In the same way why do people prefer to buy cockatiel cocks over hens. It's so sad to see a cockatiel male in a cage all alone in the window of a house. No hen to keep him company in case they mate and produce a hatch of chicks but in reality they seldom mate when pets and living in pairs as opposed to groups because hens can be quite fussy. No male friend either in case they fight but that isn't always the truth. Birds are sociable creatures. It's also sad to go into pet shops and see hens alone in a cage because customers wanted the males. I even saw two sets of couple and two single hens in the pets department of Focus in Llanishen and the single hens were wailing because their mates had been sold.

I used to make the same resolutions every year which were never realised; take some refresher driving lessons and try and find the whereabouts of an ex friend and previous owner of my main cockatiel as she disappeared.

The ones I made this year include not buying anything in a bubble pack and not buying from China because of the human and animal rights issues and I invertently broke the second because I bought Belgravia luxury hand wash in Tesco on New Year's Day and a bra two days later. However it's made me much more aware of where things are made.

I'm also using non perishable food in my kitchen cupboards which I bought last autumn to stock up for the winter. However I didn't feel I had to start on New Year's Day with millet porridge and veg juice for breakfast and dinner made from pulses and rice. I've got all January to start getting back into the habit. It's a depressing enough day as it is without having to deprive myself like that. Besides I don't spend the whole of my time between Christmas and New Year gorging on food. I hardly ate anything in the evening on Christmas Day.

My other resolution is to join groups I've been meaning to such as book clubs and yoga classes which I've dropped out of. Maybe even take up British Military Fitness in the park but not til the weather improves.

I love the one about swearing less. I think I should take that one on too. Hmm, can't remember my resolutions from last year, probably broke them in January! This year, I plan on finishing my novel and getting it published, hopefully meeting up with an old friend from South Africa who I haven't seen in years and trying to live more for the moment.

There's the Community Channel which is about community projects and at the moment is going through a climate change season til the end of January.

I like to watch the BBC Breakfast Show from 8.40 am when there are human interest stories and comments about future programmes or if awake earlier switch on sometimes and wait for the human interest stories.

Gavin and Stacey is quite funny though. I've found quite a few comedy programmes and enjoy Doctors and Casualty. I don't like the music channels because they are all about hip hop and divas at the moment. Lady Gaga. Ugh.

It's important to take lessons in order to learn how to drive on the left. In Brussels I had to get used to cycling on the right and wouldn't even dare to drive on the right even though I had a driving licence. I did take a cycling lesson as I was worried about cycling in busy parts of Brussels such as where the EU was as I would get off my bicycle and walk through subways when passing through and also to learn to cope with tram lines. I coped better than the other women as I was used to riding a bicycle and some of them weren't.

I was shocked when I saw 'Skins' or maybe it was because I led a sheltered life or had stuffy friends. In the seventies we had to tread the fine line between being too stuffy on the one hand or too racy on the other. Maybe we were more discrete. I thought I was being a bit of a ladette because I drunk lager and cider in the same evening though not in the same glass mixed up and I pranced around being silly stealing guys' hats while the other girls sat stiffly on the edge of the hall or dancing with each other in the hope men would ask them to dance. I never took drugs though.

It was only adults over the age of 18 who hadn't yet married and had left home behaved in the way the teenagers did in 'Skins'. I think it's more the parents who shock me rather than the teenagers. I prefer 'Coming of Age' on BBC3 and even though it's a comedy it seems more real.
